This is a true-to-life story of a man who went through various
hardships in life but was able to overcome and to accomplish
his dreams. This man, whom I have high respect for, is actually my
father.
My father had a very humble beginning. He spent
his childhood without plenty of food to eat and clothes to wear. The Korean was
just ended a few years after my father was born so almost everyone suffered
from starvation and shortage. To make things worse, his father passed away right
after he was born. Growing up without having a
father who usually support the family financially, my father started to work at his early age taking all the
responsibility of the head of the family.
Even after he got married, my parents' life condition did not seem
to improve at all. Eventually, he made up his
mind to do his own business even without any
financial support, affluent academic backgrounds, or even personal connections.
The risk and probability of failing was so high. True
enough, he failed on his first try. But my father didn’t give up. For the
second time, he tried to put up again another business even though he had a
looming debt to pay back. Fortunately, this time, it succeeded and he
earned a lot of money. However, like everyone says, “Life is not a walk in the
park.” He was betrayed by his best friend and co-founder. In addition, his
company had to file bankruptcy in the end.
During that time, loan sharks would come over to my
house to pressure my father to pay his debt. He told me that during this
time of his life, he was always afraid to wake up in
the morning. But he gathered all his guts
and exerted all his efforts to establish another
company again and to pay back all liabilities.
Now he is in his mid-fifties and he runs his own company with thirty employees.
What I really admire and respect about
him is not just his accomplishments, but more so,
his strong will not to give up on his dreams even when
he was at the pit of his life. He didn’t lose track of where he was going.He would often say that I knew less of his real sufferings.
