Unit Two : Graph and Table Analysis

Unit 2-1 Bar Graph.

(Presentation)

Let me talk about “Income Distribution”, using data from World Bank Development Indicators 2008. This graph tells us the income distribution of several countries in the world.

You can see the bar graph in this slide. The horizontal axis represents each countries and the vertical axis is the share of income among a certain percentage of population within country.  The dark blue bars mean the share of income of the poorest 20% of the country’s population, while the light blue bars show those of the richest 20%.

Through this simple graph, you can easily understand how fair those countries’ income is distributed. In Sub-Saharan African countries, for example, the highest share of income is concentrated on the richest 20%, showing that 64.5% of the total national income is owned by the richest 20%. However, very tiny amount of income, 3.6% of the national income is for the poorest 20% of people in these countries.

This means more than numbers. The poorest people in those countries may be deficient in essential food, water, cloths and houses, while the richest enjoy the privileges. This phenomenon also appears in Latin America and Caribbean countries.

How about high-income countries? Their gap of income between the poorest and richest is smaller than other African or Latin American countries.

So, we now guess that the poorer country has more inequality in income, which prevents the country’s economic development. The people in the poor country could not provide skilled and healthy labor due to lack of good education and health care system. Furthermore, the unfairness in this country makes its people divided culturally, socially and politically, which obstruct its economic growth.

The reason why we make an effort to build equitable and fair society is not just for social justice, but also for achieving economic development.
